License, Trial & Credits
How the trial works, what a credit buys, activating your license, moving to a new Mac, and managing your plan.
Everything operational about trials, plans, and licenses in one place. For prices and choosing a plan, see pricing — this page is about how it all works once you're in.
The free trial#
Every download starts with the same trial: 7 days, 50 renames, no credit card — it begins in the app with just your email. During the trial you have the full product: Smart Rename, Presets, Watch Folders, Rules, Content Search, all providers.
When the trial ends (either clock runs out), renaming pauses but nothing else does — your app, settings, presets, rules, and full rename history stay intact, and every rename you made stays revertible. Pick a plan in Settings → Usage or on the pricing page and you continue exactly where you left off.
What a credit is (Managed plan)#
On the Managed plan, one credit = one successfully renamed file. The fine print, in your favor:
- Failed renames don't consume credits. If a file can't be processed, you're not charged for it.
- Renaming the same file again is a new rename — it costs a credit, because the AI runs again.
- Unused credits carry over into your next billing cycle, so a quiet month isn't a wasted one.
- Your balance and renewal date are always visible in Settings → Usage.
Credits only exist on the Managed plan. With the Self-Managed license you pay your AI provider directly (your own key) or nothing at all (local models) — NameQuick never meters you.
Activating your license#
Managed subscription: sign in with the email you used at checkout — no key to copy.
Self-Managed license: after purchase you receive a license key; paste it into the app when prompted (or via Settings). The license covers one Mac with lifetime updates.
Moving to a new Mac#
Self-Managed licenses are tied to one active device. Before switching: deactivate on the old Mac (Settings → license section), then activate on the new one with the same key. If you see an activation limit message, the key is still active on another machine — deactivate there first, or email support if that Mac is gone (dead drive, sold machine — we'll sort it out).
Working offline#
Local models work fully offline. License checks tolerate normal offline stretches — laptops on planes are fine. After a long time without any connection the app will ask to revalidate; connecting briefly is enough.
Setapp#
Using NameQuick through Setapp? There's nothing to activate and no credit balance — your Setapp subscription covers it, and the app skips the licensing screens entirely.
Changing or canceling a plan#
Manage your subscription through the customer portal linked from your purchase emails — upgrade credit tiers, switch billing period, or cancel anytime (you keep access through the period you paid for). Switching between Managed and Self-Managed is straightforward too; see the pricing FAQ for plan-change and refund specifics.
Something not covered here? Troubleshooting handles errors; for anything account-related, support@namequick.app answers fast.
