What NameQuick does
NameQuick turns files with meaningless names like Scan_0042.pdf into names that describe them, like 2026-03-14 Hetzner Invoice 1043.pdf. It works on documents, images and media, and it can file and tag them in the same step.
Content-based renaming
NameQuick reads document text, runs on-device OCR on scans and screenshots, and uses the visual content and EXIF data of photos across more than 30 file types. You can describe the naming you want in your own words, or build it from a template.
Watch Folders and Connected Inboxes
NameQuick watches folders such as Downloads and routes PDF attachments from approved email senders into them. New files go to Review first, and a folder can switch to automatic once you trust it.
Rules, Quick Organize and Extraction Sheets
Rules move files, add Finder tags and color labels, adjust dates and archive. Quick Organize turns a messy batch into a folder plan you approve, and Extraction Sheets export fields such as dates, vendors and amounts as CSV.
What makes NameQuick different
It names files from their content, not from rules you write
Pattern renamers like A Better Finder Rename (€29.95) and Transnomino rename by position, counters and find-and-replace. Hazel ($42) files by conditions you define. NameQuick reads the file itself, so it works on names that carry no information.
Three AI modes, including fully local
Run a local model through Ollama, LM Studio or MLX and nothing leaves your Mac. Or use your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini key, or Managed AI with no setup. Renamer.ai stores web uploads for up to 24 hours, and a local mode is not documented on its site.
Review before anything changes
Every rename is previewed, Watch Folders send new files to Review first, and any change can be undone from History. Original creation and modification dates are always preserved.
A one-time license, or a subscription from $12
Self-Managed costs $69 once and includes lifetime updates. Managed AI starts at $12 a month for 500 renames on unlimited Macs. Renamer.ai has no one-time option and starts at $9.95 a month for 200 files.
EU-routed processing, never used for training
Managed AI processes files in the EU for renaming only and deletes them within 24 hours at the latest. OCR runs on the Mac in every mode, and files are never uploaded for storage.

The team behind NameQuick
NameQuick was founded in 2025 by Josef Moucachen in Amsterdam. It started on the Mac, now ships as NameQuick 3 for Mac, and added a Windows edition on 2026-08-13.
How NameQuick works
- Getting started. Download the app and start free. Self-Managed includes 50 renames with no card and no time limit. Managed starts with a trial of 50 renames over 14 days at checkout.
- Onboarding. The setup guide covers choosing an AI mode and a first folder, and the docs include worked examples for invoices, contracts, research papers and bank statements.
- Support. Email support@namequick.app with product questions, corrections or support requests.
- Updates. Mac and Windows ship on one release train, listed in the changelog. Self-Managed licenses include lifetime updates.
